Study in Germany | September 2026 Intake

Germany remains the smartest financial decision in global higher education. Over 42,000 Indian students were enrolled at German universities in the 2024–25 academic year, making India the largest international student community in the country. The reason is simple: most public universities charge zero tuition, even for non-EU students, while offering world-class engineering, computer science, and business programmes.
If you’re planning to study in Germany 2027, the work begins now. Applications for the Winter Semester 2027 (October start) open between April and July 2027, but DAAD scholarship deadlines fall as early as October 2026. Miss the timeline and you lose a full year. This guide breaks down free education in Germany, top public universities, DAAD scholarship steps, blocked account rules, and the exact path Indian students should follow.

Why Indian Students Choose to Study in Germany 2027
Germany delivers a rare combination: free or near-free tuition, world-class research universities, and a clear path to working in Europe after graduation.

Free Education Germany — The Real Story

Public universities in 15 of Germany’s 16 federal states charge zero tuition fees for all students, regardless of nationality. You only pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) of €150 to €350, which usually includes unlimited public transport across your city or even the entire state.
The one exception is Baden-Württemberg, which charges non-EU students €1,500 per semester (€3,000 per year). Universities affected include Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Freiburg, and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Even with this fee, a full 2-year master’s at Heidelberg costs around €6,000 total in tuition — still a fraction of what you’d pay in the UK or USA.

Globally Ranked Universities

Germany has nine universities in the QS World Top 200 (2026 rankings), led by TU Munich (#22) and LMU Munich. RWTH Aachen, Heidelberg, and TU Berlin all rank inside the global top 150.

18-Month Post-Study Job-Seeker Visa

After graduation, you get 18 months to find skilled employment in Germany, with full work rights during this period. Engineering, IT, and data roles in Berlin, Munich, and Frankfurt pay starting salaries between €50,000 and €70,000 per year, which translates to roughly ₹46–65 lakh annually.

English-Taught Programmes Have Expanded

There are now over 2,000 master’s programmes taught entirely in English at German universities. You don’t need German to study or work in tech and engineering roles, though learning basic German makes daily life and PR pathways significantly easier.
